by affect us, i didnt mean that we go out and take drugs and steal stuff, but more that we become less aware of it and start ignoring it. as michael said, we become numb.

yea but im asking you...

do you as youth feel numb to pain?

maybe you should come and do community serive with me in south auckland. you really appreciate your upbringing when you see these people have nothing. i visit the rest home and i just heard about a mans death...i only saw him once..no i was not numb...i felt like crying. I also visit the womens refuge where i meet women who have been abused by others and little children who keep asking there mums where is daddy...how sad is that as the mothers know they will never see him again....how sad is that? i also go to the brain injury centre where i visit people who were once abled people who now can not move and have trouble speaking...again how sad is that? Another place ive been is i volunteer in the childrens ward at middlemore hospital...every time i meet kids under 10 with life threatening diseases like cancer....and once again you feel so sorry for them.

yet still all of these people are happy and smiling. I do not know why but they are and its bizzare. They are all really nice people who have difficulites in theree lives. when ever i see them i do not feel numb i feel sorrow and regret and i wish that there lives could get better and hope they will soon. Yes i play some violent video games but never have they made me feel numb to pain and definatly not the pain i witness everyday.

I didnt want to have to bring this up but, in our culture, men specificaly are meant to be hard and strong, and lets face it, its mainly guys who play the more violent games anyway, so maybe its not really are people becoming numb, but are males specifically becoming more numb?

Might talk a little bit about biology and psychology:

In some men, playing violent video games increases testosterone, which can lead to arrogance and feelings of invincibility, arrogance in my opinion causes you to lack judgement, and so some people begin to idolise the characters of games and wish to follow the footsteps of the "hero" in the game and seeing as it is a violent video game they are inspired to act violent as their idol does.

On a cultural scale:

Because I am a Male I know how most feel, and presure from modern day culture to be the Strong, Hard man your expected to be, is everywhere, the presure is so great that most people feel compelled to do it simply for conformity so men (in general) act tough and are expected to be numb, and so appear numb, some people take this further and do infact numb themselves to this.

maybe so but can we really assume that the entire male population is like this?

no we cant....and yes i no that as a female i can get more emotional towards these types if things.

Also does this idea about numbness really apply to us older teenagers?

if there was a child playing video games say he was about 12 then yes he would be numb to the pain yet if he went out and stole a car his parents would punish him or if he developed a drug addiction and hes too young to go out and buy a prostitute anyway so he doesnt need to worrry about that. but at 16 and 17 you know what is right and wrong and if you dont then your parents clearly did a horrible job in raising you.

still these types of things do not occur in the society that we live in. We are all religious so clearly our parents did something right there and have raised us with good strong morals yet other places in south auckland maybe parents do not set strong boundaries and rules when raising there children. The teenagers here are into drugs, smoking, drinking, stealing and pety crimes because there parents have failed to provide a stable childhood with clear boundaries and rules which they stick to. teenagers are rarely punished in these homes and parents do not care where there kids are on a friday and saturday night as long as they arnt dead or in a car crash.

ok...do you as a teenager have clear boundaries and rules which were set and inforced by your parents?

some games are perfectly harmless fun even if there is a little violence in them but i think it is very bad if we just go with the flow on what we see in the line of graphic violence. we can't let the world dictate what goes into us because then that becomes what we think about.4 al you that know of sattelite (christian band from EC09 south island yeah!) think of the song"Not of this World"

and for those who don't know the song it goes:

"the world is full of evil things/
i don't wat to be/ NO NO NO/
i'll show your love/ in all i do/
to work against it!

i'm not of this world/
'cos you have saved me/
i'm not of this world/
so let it hate me/
i'm not of this world/
'cos you have saved me/
and i will live/
eternally"

really good song. and it does show us what we should be. we should work against "it", being violence drugs etc, SHOWING GODS LOVE in ALL we do.

gar... "wat" anoys me...
but anyway, it is true that most violent games are played by males. but they also see violent games as less violent (in proporion) to females (no offence). eg: hamish? were you talking about worms? because if you were... look again. its atcually quite violent. just because the participants are cute lil pink blobs called worms that make cute noises when you hit them with an exploding sheep does not make blowing something up with an exploding sheep "non-violent". it even has an option for "blood effects"!!!

Ok I'm doing poll results at the moment but I do not feel ready to close this topic quite yet as it looks as if there is still much to be discussed

I was thinking perhaps we could split this up into multiple threads, that way you can talk about specific things rather than squishing it all in here, that way I can post the poll results of the initial question but we can still continue with discussion
